Explore the Great Allegheny Passage: Pennsylvania’s Premier Rail Trail for E-Bike Adventures

The Great Allegheny Passage, better known as the GAP Trail, is nestled right in Southwest Pennsylvania. Spanning 150 miles through PA mountains, small towns, shaded pathways, and rich American history, it connects Cumberland, Maryland, to Pittsburgh, PA. What makes this trail especially unique, however, is its iconic medallions that mark its official start and end points.

Trail History

The GAP Trail began in 1978, when the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy gave the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks the deed to 26.75 miles of the Western Maryland Railway’s abandoned corridor. Here, the first section of the GAP Trail was laid between Ohiopyle and Confluence.

Soon after the construction of the GAP Trail began, volunteers from neighboring towns, including West Newton, Connellsville, Rockwood, and Meyersdale, started to develop similar segments of the trail for their neighbors’ enjoyment. As the trend continued, trail construction emerged in several areas of PA’s Laurel Highlands, Frostburg, Cumberland, Downtown Pittsburgh, McKeesport, and Homestead.

The Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy, known as the Allegheny Trail Alliance during that time, coordinated fundraising efforts in order to renovate the historic railroad and complete the missing links of the GAP Trail. Trail advocate Linda McKenna Boxx also worked hand-in-hand with colleagues and volunteers to develop the iconic GAP Trail that was officially entirely completed in 2013.
